We know God has shown Himself in the Word. But sometimes reading the Bible can be overwhelming! Where do we start? Here are some practical tips that may help in your time with God.
“The primary purpose of reading the Bible is not to know the Bible but to know God.”
1. Read One Chapter:
When starting to read the Bible, we can try to read the whole thing in one sitting. This can be a daunting task! Instead of trying to read large sections, read one chapter a day! As you do this faithfully, you will end up reading large portions, but not feel discouraged.
2. Read with Questions:
The Bible is supposed to be interactive, but sometimes you can read it and not know what to do with what you just read! Try this: every time you read your “one chapter a day,” ask answer these questions.
1. What does this teach me about God?
2. What does this teach me about people?
3. What does this teach me about sin?
4. What does this teach me about Salvation?
5. What does this call me to believe?
6. What does this call me to do?
3. Read with Expectation:
We already talked about how God hears us when we pray. We can trust this because God wants to have a relationship with us! This is why He made us and died for us! – So if we know we can talk to God, we can count on the fact that He will talk back!
When you read God’s Word, read it with expectation that He will be talking to You! Start your time in the Word asking God to show up, and you can count on the fact that He will speak to you about the very things going on in your life that you care about!
4. Read Ready to Change:
God’s Word says that it is “living and active.” If something is alive and active, that means that it should be currently doing something! We established you should daily be in God’s Word, reading it with active questions, and believe God will speak to you specifically in the Word! Now, you need to be ready to be obedient. God wants us to live what He tells us!
God loves you and has an amazing plan for your life- better than anything you can imagine! So let Him call the shots in your life. Talk to Him. Expect Him to talk back! And as you trust and obey, just wait and see all the amazing things you will do by His side!
“I will not abandon you as orphans- I will come to You. Soon the World will no longer see Me, but you will see Me. Since I live, you also will live.” – John 14:19
