Imagine we’ve jumped back in time. It's the year 1912, and you are on the famous ship the Titanic. Just like before, the ship is going down.
So what are you going to do? Well lucky you have a few options and here they are:
1. You can stay on the boat (that is currently sinking) and do nothing. But you know you probably won't make it. You are in a terrible place, and you aren’t trying to do anything to change your current situation.
(This reminds me of Matthew 25:29. In our life, when it comes to our life, we may choose to do nothing in our suffering- not choosing to trust in God. “To those who use well what they are given, even more will be given, and they will have an abundance. But from those who do nothing, even what little they have will be taken away.”)
Ok. Let's try a different option.
2. You can head to the lifeboat but once you get there all you do is ask questions. You might ask some things like, “How many people can be in the boat,” “Can I bring my friends or family,” “Where is this boat going,” or maybe even, “How long is it going to take for this boat to get me to safety?” As good as all those questions are, if you still haven’t chosen to get on the boat then you are not any better off than the first option.
(Another parallel to life. Check out Proverbs 3:5 “Trust in the Lord with all your heart; do not depend on your own understanding.” It can be tempting to use our own reasoning, but there may yet be another option.)
Still not doing too great? How about just one more?
3. You get on the lifeboat because you understand the dangers of the situation you’re in, and you trust that this lifeboat is going to take you to a safer place. It might be a bumpy and long ride. It probably is cold and difficult at times. And you might not be around the same people as before. But you have to take action and make a choice.
(Similarly, Psalm 91:4 tells us, “Under His wings, shall you trust and find refuge.” When trouble comes your way, stay in that place of refuge in God. It’s a place of safety from any enemy. So get in the Lifeboat. Choose to live in God’s refuge even though you may not know what is up ahead.)
